The advent of AI, gender inclusion, diversity and sustainability are some of the key themes covered at this year’s Inspiring Makers event, which is due to be held on Thursday 8 May at Guildhall, Bath. With a line-up of thought-provoking talks and panel discussions from leading voices in the design and making industry, the day aims to inspire future generations of craftspeople to promote hand skills and preserve the legacy of craft.

Now in its fourth year, the not-for-profit day, previously called The New Makers’ Conference, is organised by world-class interiors brand Artichoke and The Furniture Makers’ Company, the City of London livery company and charity for the furnishing industry.
With the decline of the UK’s master furniture makers from 90,000 to 1,000 over past 150 years, Inspiring Makers offers a unique platform for emerging talent to connect with peers as well as some of the UK’s influential experts.
Attendees can expect engaging topical discussions with this year’s speakers including:
Bruce Hodgson – Founder of Artichoke
Sean Sutcliffe – Founder & Chairman of Benchmark
Camilla McLean, Managing Director, Greg Stone, Creative Development Lead & Katy Thompson, Junior Furniture Maker/Finisher at Matthew Cox
Selena Bolingbroke – Principle of The Building Crafts College
John Orchard – Chief Executive of Woodland Heritage
Bruce Hodgson, Founder of Artichoke comments: “As heritage makers, we are committed to nurturing talent and preserving traditional handcrafting techniques for the future. Artistry and technical skill at our level can take decades in the making which is why it’s so important to encourage young people into the craft. Along with our other educational initiatives such as apprenticeships, Inspiring Makers helps to encourage, train and sustain the dedicated masters of the future. Certainly, this year’s event will be another success and inspiring for all.”
David Dewing, Chairman of The Furniture Makers’ Company, South West Region comments: “We are very excited to once again be partnering with Artichoke on the fourth Inspiring Makers event. Join us for a day filled with ideas, advice and encouragement for new makers, featuring insights from industry torchbearers. This event is perfect for
any emerging maker, young or old, looking to advance their career in furniture. It’s an opportunity to listen to experts, network with peers and connect with leaders in our sector. On behalf of The Furniture Makers’ Company, I would like to thank Artichoke, along with Axminster Tools, Halstock and Ergochair, for sponsoring this inspirational day. We look forward to seeing you there.”
Tickets are priced at £15, which includes lunch and refreshments, with limited spaces and can be purchased through Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/inspiring-makers-conference-2025-tickets-1279108500959
